A method for identifying the left-eye and right-eye images of a stereoscopic image pair comprising determining the spatial variation of disparity between images of the image pair and comparing this spatial variation with a disparity model. A correlation parameter is determined between a set of disparity values for a plurality of image regions and a corresponding set of disparity values from the disparity model. The contribution of the disparity value for a region to the correlation parameter is weighted in dependence on a confidence factor for that region. Also disclosed is a method for identifying the left-eye and right-eye images of a stereoscopic image pair by comparing the determined spatial variation of disparity with a disparity model and which the disparity model represents objects at the sides of the frame as closer to the camera than objects nearer to the horizontal centre of the frame.
