PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable use of an extraction residue remaining after dissolving and extracting manganese ore with sulfuric acid as a raw material for production of manganese-based alloy iron by reducing a sulfur component in the extraction residue.SOLUTION: The manganese ore extraction residue containing sulfur is made into slurry in water, alkali is added to the obtained slurry in such an amount that pH of liquid immediately after the end of addition is 10.5 or more at 25°C, and a solid content is recovered after maintaining the contact state of the residue and alkali.
