PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near-field light generation device capable of preventing a near-field light generation element from being a high temperature by heat generated particularly from a tip part of the near-field light generation element due to plasmon resonance and the absorption of incident light without deteriorating cross light in a near-field light generation element for recording information by changing an optical characteristic of a recording layer of an information recording medium, an information recording medium, an optical information recording and reproduction device, and an optical information recording and reproduction method.;SOLUTION: The near-field light generation element relating to this invention is a near-field light generation element which is arranged in the vicinity of an information recording medium having a recording layer such that a longitudinal direction is almost perpendicular to the information recording medium, and has a tip part for generating near-field light by irradiation light outputted from a light source.
