(1) The metal complex dye indicates a molar absorption coefficient of 1,000 Mcmor more in a wavelength region longer than 700 nm in ethanol solution absorption. (2) In the metal complex dye, a half value width of an absorption spectrum based on MLCT absorption of dye on the longest wavelength side in a transmission spectrum of a TiOelectrode having a film thickness of 2.5±0.5 m after dye adsorption at the time when a dye adsorption amount per unit surface area of the electrode is in a range from 1.0×10mol/cm to 2.0×10mol/cm, is less than 1.2 times of that at the time when the dye adsorption amount per unit surface area of the electrode is in a range from 1.0×10mol/cm to 1.0×10mol/cm.
