PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method that designate a processing unit when using a Douglas-Peucker algorithm to perform processing of simplifying vector map data.;SOLUTION: A processing unit designation method that designates a processing unit when using a Douglas-Peucker algorithm to perform processing of simplifying vector map data includes the steps of: specifying a point working as a base point of the processing unit from the vector map data; calculating clearance between the specified base point and a target point connecting to the base point; specifying the target point where a value obtained by subtracting the clearance between the target point and the base point from the clearance between a next target point of the target point and the base point, as an inflection point; and designating a portion from the base point to the specified inflection point as the processing unit.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
