PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bio-mediation technique for cleaning environmental pollution of soil, underground water and the like polluted with an oil containing alkanes such as a fuel oil and an industrial oil under an aerobic condition.SOLUTION: The environment of the soil, the underground water and the like polluted with the oil containing the alkanes such as the fuel oil and the industrial oil is cleaned by utilizing Acinetobacter sp. KO14-1 strain which is a new microorganism having the high ability for degrading the alkanes. The new microorganism has the activity for degrading the alkanes in a wide pH range of from pH 5 to pH 9 or higher, and exhibits the degrading activity even at a low temperature of about 15°C. The cleaning of the polluted environment can effectively be carried out by utilizing the microorganisms while feeding oxygen. The cleaning of the polluted environment can also effectively be carried out by adding a nutrient salt to the Acinetobacter sp. KO14-1 strain.
