PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rail weld excess metal re-profiling device and a rail weld excess metal re-profiling method, capable of executing accurate and uniform re-profiling work without excessive or insufficient scraping of a weld excess metal at a joint part of a rail without taking costs, time and labor.;SOLUTION: A cutter 52 of a re-profiling mechanism part 50 is rotated by a re-profiling motor 51 in an unloaded state that the cutter 52 is not in contact with a rail R or the like, and an unloaded current value which flows to the re-profiling motor 51 in the unloaded state is measured and stored. Then, the re-profiling mechanism part 50 is lowered in the state that the cutter 52 is rotated, and by comparing an overload current value which flows to the re-profiling motor 51 in the lowered state with the unloaded current value, a height of a weld excess metal peak of the rail R is measured. Similarly, a height of a top surface of the rail R a prescribed distance away from the peak of the weld excess metal is measured.
