PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hollow fiber carbon membrane which can be obtained by carbonizing a hollow fiber carbon membrane precursor using polyphenylene oxide, secures gas separation performance and flexibility necessary for modularization and has high practicality, and to provide a method for producing the hollow fiber carbon membrane.;SOLUTION: There is provided the hollow fiber carbon membrane which can be obtained by carbonizing the hollow fiber carbon membrane precursor using polyphenylene oxide and which has rupture elongation of 1 to 4%. The method for producing the hollow fiber carbon membrane includes: a process for dissolving polyphenylene oxide in an aprotic solvent; a process for ejecting polyphenylene oxide from a spinning nozzle at temperature no less than temperature-induced phase separation point to obtain a hollow fiber-shaped material; a process for coagulating hollow fiber-shaped polyphenylene oxide by water or the mixed solution of water and an organic solvent; a process for obtaining the hollow fiber carbon membrane precursor by drying coagulated hollow fiber-shaped material from a water-containing state without being subjected to solvent displacement treatment; and a process for carbonizing the hollow fiber carbon membrane precursor.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
