PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance in high-speed heavy cutting.;SOLUTION: In this surface-coated cutting tool, a lower layer comprising an adhesive Ti compound layer and a reformed TiCN layer and an upper layer comprising a reformed (Al, Zr)2O3 layer are vapor-deposited on the surface of a tool base. When the quantity and positions of Σ3-adaptive grain boundaries which face the boundary surface between the upper layer and the lower layer are measured, 30-70% of the Σ3 adaptive grain boundaries facing the boundary surface form a crystal grain boundary in continuous with the Σ3-adaptive grain boundaries of the upper layer. Desirably, the ratio of Σ3 of the lower layer in the depth area of up to 1 μm from the boundary surface to at least the base surface side is 60% or more of the total of ΣN+1.
