PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for purifying polluted water in a high salt concentration environment, such as seawater and brackish water by an activated sludge method, and to provide a method for effectively treating surplus sludge generated in the purification process. PSOLUTION: The purification method enables the purification of the polluted water in a high salt concentration environment by using activated sludge derived from seawater. The surplus sludge treatment method treats the surplus sludge generated in the purification process by the seawater-derived activated sludge method and at the same time obtains methane gas by using the surplus sludge as a substrate of methane fermentation.
