PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermo-optical phase shifter which achieves lower power consumption, and a variable optical attenuator, a 1×M optical switch, and a variable wavelength filter which use the same.;SOLUTION: The thermo-optical phase shifter includes an optical waveguide 13 for guiding an optical signal and a heater 15 which heats the optical waveguide 13 partially to give a phase change to the optical signal. The optical waveguide 13 and the heater 15 are provided to overlap with each other so that the heater 15 and heated parts 131 and 132 of the optical waveguide 13 are of the same lengthwise direction, and the heated parts of the optical waveguide are formed into such a folding structure that a plurality of optical waveguide parallel with each other are optically combined into one folding waveguide, whereby the heated parts of the optical waveguide are provided with a high density in a position overlapping with the heater. The variable optical attenuator, the 1×M optical switch, and the variable wavelength filter can be constituted by using the thermo-optical phase shifter.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
