PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to isolate catechol-degrading enzymes degrading the catechol even in an ammoniacal liquor of a special composition discharged from a coke oven from activated sludge of the ammoniacal liquor and utilize the catechol-degrading enzymes and to further provide a method for treating wastewater using the catechol-degrading enzymes.;SOLUTION: The catechol-degrading enzymes are encoded with a DNA having a specific base sequence. The method for degrading the catechol in the wastewater comprises mixing at least one or some of the catechol-degrading enzymes and the wastewater containing the catechol and degrading the catechol in the wastewater.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
