PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method of a shaft furnace which can be applicable irrespective of the kind of cokes used, sufficiently suppresses powdering of cokes to be charged into the shaft furnace such as a blast furnace and enables smooth, stable operation of the shaft furnace, and an apparatus used therein for accelerating powdering of the cokes to be charged into the shaft furnace. PSOLUTION: When separating the cokes into a mass part and a powder part by rotating the cokes in a rotating drum, the separation procedure is conducted while removing at least a portion of the cokes powder part produced in the rotating drum, and the separated cokes mass part is charged into and used in the shaft furnace. For this purpose, the apparatus 1 for accelerating powdering of the cokes to be charged into the shaft furnace is used, wherein the apparatus has a coke-feed opening 3 on one end and a coke-discharge opening 4 on the other end of the rotating drum 2 in the direction of axis of rotation, an intermediate discharge opening 5 which is located between 3 and 4 for removing the cokes powder part from 2 and a sieving device 10 for separating the cokes discharged from 4 into the mass part and the powder part.
