The method involves rotationally fixing a set of stator blades in a torque converter to a non-rotatable stator shaft of the converter. A torque converter clutch is partially engaged in the converter to transmit torque from a housing for the converter to a turbine in the converter at a speed ratio between the turbine and the housing. A pump clutch is disengaged at another speed ratio between the turbine and the housing and where the pump clutch is arranged to transmit torque from the housing to pump. The converter clutch is fully engaged at a third speed ratio between the housing and the turbine. An independent claim is also included for a torque converter and comprising a torque converter clutch.
