PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus, a multifunction printer apparatus and an image reading method, wherein suitable reading can be performed according to an operation mode considering an image to be read out. PSOLUTION: Image reading is performed as follows when applying light to an image document from respective light emitting means for respectively emitting three primary colors of light and receiving the reflected light of the applied light by a light receiving means to read out the image document. Namely, an operation mode for image reading is specified and a condition for image reading is set according to the specified operation mode. Then, image reading according to a method for successively applying three primary colors of light from respective light emitting means to the image document and reading out the reflected light from the image document by the light receiving means is performed in accordance with the set condition. Alternatively, image reading according to a method for simultaneously applying each two primary colors of three different combinations out of the three primary colors of light from the light emitting means to the image document and reading out the reflected light from the image document by the light receiving means is performed under the set condition, or image reading is performed twice according to these two methods.
