PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel polymeric organic compound having a nitrogen-containing heterocycle having a sulfonic acid group or a sulfonic acid salt group, an ion exchanger using it, an electrolyte membrane, a catalyst, a membrane electrode assembly, and a fuel cell. PSOLUTION: The novel polymeric organic compound represented by general formula (1) having both (A) a constitution unit comprising an ether having a nitrogen-containing heterocycle and (B) a constitution unit containing the sulfonic acid group or the sulfonic acid salt group in the molecule is provided. The ion exchanger using it is provided. The electrolyte membrane, the catalyst, the membrane electrode assembly and the fuel cell are provided.
