PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for increasing the amount of a highly unsaturated fatty acid produced by a microbe having the ability to produce a highly unsaturated acid and to provide a highly unsaturated fatty acid-containing microbe obtained by the method.;SOLUTION: The method for producing a highly unsaturated acid or a highly unsaturated lipid comprises inactivating those fatty acid synthetase genes of a microbe having the ability to produce a highly unsaturated fatty acid which relate to the synthesis of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and culturing the resulting microbe.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
