The invention provides compositions for preventing or treating renal disease and improving renal function comprising at least two ingredients selected from the group consisting of andoxidants and millochondrial cofactors in sufficient amounts to prevent or treat renal disease or for improving renal function and methods for preventing and treating renal disease or improving renal function comprising administering such compositions to an animal susceptible to or suffering from impaired renal disease or renal function. In a preferred embodiment, the composition is mixed with one or more food ingredients to produce a food composition useful for preventing kidney disease and improving renal function, particularly in older animals.
