Tinospora cordifolia powder was completely extracted with n-hexane. The remaining residue was further extracted with ethyl acetate and methanol by using soxhlat apparatus sequentially and concentrated to obtain crude extract. 10g of methanol extract was subjected to column chromatography, (on a silica gel column -Merck 70-230 mesh, 400 g, 3.5 i.d. *60 cm) and successively eluted with stepwise gradient of Hexane, Hexane and Ethyl acetate and then Ethyl acetate, Ethyl acetate and Methanol and finally with Methanol. The fractions were collected and each fraction was spotted on a precoated Silica gel 60 F254, 0.25mm thick TLC plate (Merck) and fractions with similar Rf values in TLC pattern were pooled together into 5 fractions. Fraction 3 was rechromatographed on a silica gel column with increasing order of polarity of solvent. A pure compound was eluted at 40% methanol/ ethyl acetate and gave single spot in TLC. The compound was subjected to spectral analyses for structural determination. Novel compound was found only in the fraction 9. The compound is useful for medical and pharmaceutical applications.
