There are disclosed Phthalide compositions isolated from the plant species Ligusticum porteri, more particularly from the compound referred to as ligustilide which protects the gastric mucosa without affecting gastric secretion or the activity of other drugs, unlike other commercial substances do. Said compound also prevents irritation caused by other drugs without altering their action, therefore it may be used as an additive in a variety of pharmaceutical compositions. Their specific use may aid in the treatment of diseases that cause damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa as Crohn's disease, lupus erythematosus, irritable bowel syndrome, gastric hypersecretion, ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal tract cancer and esophagitis.
