The powerplant (10) has a piston engine (30) i.e. diesel engine, provided with two rows of pistons, and a flywheel (50) and a torque shaft (40) displaced by the pistons for driving a standard power gearbox (20) dimensioned for a turbine engine. The torque shaft is arranged between the rows of the pistons. An adjusting unit (60) adjusts relative rotational speed between rotational speed of the torque shaft and rotational speed of the flywheel. The adjusting unit has a reduction gear (61) arranged upstream of the torque shaft. An independent claim is also included for a method for utilizing a piston engine in a powerplant.
