The moving walkway or escalator installation comprises a plate belt or step belt (5) and a balustrade (2). The lighting system comprises a light-permeable inner panelling (3) of the balustrade (2), which is formed by one or more mutually adjoining plates (3.1) free of interruption. The lighting system comprises, in addition, one or more lighting bodies (6) which are mounted in corresponding sockets (11). The sockets are fastened in the interior of the balustrade (2) to a mechanical structure (9, 10). The inner panelling (3) of the balustrade (2) can be lit up over the whole area by the lighting system.
