A method for the preparation of a catalyst to be used for the vapor phase epoxidation of alkene comprising:a) mixing zirconium silicate, with carrier raw materials comprising boehmite alumina AlOOH and/or gamma-alumina as a refractory solid support;b) adding a mixture containing an acidic component and fluoride anions to the carrier raw materials with the added zirconium silicate;c) calcining the fluorinated carrier raw materials with the added zirconium silicate at a temperature less than 1540°C to form a modified carrier comprising alpha-alumina, wherein the modified carrier comprises zirconium silicate; andd) depositing one or more silver compounds onto the modified carrier to form a catalyst.
