An off-road work vehicle (1) has a steer-by-wire steering system having a device (40) for determining the angular displacement of a steering wheel (5). The device (40) has a cam (7) configured to rotate about an axis at an identical angular speed as the steering wheel (5), a first sensor (11) proximal to a facing outer surface (13) of the cam (7) and being configured to determine a distance between the first sensor (11) and the facing outer surface (13) of the cam (7), a second sensor (12) proximal to a facing outer surface (13) of the cam (7) and being configured to determine a distance between the second sensor (12) and the facing outer surface (13) of the cam (7), and a processor (14) operably connected with the first and second sensors (11, 12) and configured to determine an angular position of the steering wheel (5) and a direction of rotation of the steering wheel (5) based upon data generated by the first and/or the second sensor (11, 12). The distance between each of the first and second sensors (11, 12) and the facing outer surface (13) of the cam (7) changes gradually over a first major portion (20) of the facing outer surface and sharply over a second (21), minor portion of the facing outer surface. The two sensors (11, 12) are redundant to one another and help maintain the robustness of the system.
