Preparing a catalyst comprising at least one porous support and at least one metallic phase containing nickel and at least one Group IB metal M in a proportion such that the molar ratio of M/Ni is 0.005-0.5, comprises: (a1) depositing the nickel on the support to obtain a monometallic supported catalyst made of nickel; and (b1) depositing, in the presence of at least one reducing gas and in the absence of any aqueous solvent, at least one organometallic compound of the metal on the monometallic catalyst. An independent claim is included for process for selective hydrogenation of polyunsaturated hydrocarbon charge comprising passing the charge on at least one reaction unit provided with the supported catalyst comprising the metallic phase.
