A method of guiding physical exercise in a subject who regularly participates in physical exercise is disclosed. The method is based on the determination of the amount of a cardiac troponin in a sample obtained at rest from said subject. Moreover, there is a method for assessing in a subject, who regularly participates in exercise and who shows an elevated level of a cardiac Troponin, whether the elevated level of the cardiac Troponin is caused by physical exercise, or not. Further envisaged are kits and devices adapted to carry out the method. The application also relates to a system for guiding physical exercise in a subject who regularly participates in physical exercise as disclosed herein and to reagents and kits used in performing the methods disclosed herein.
