A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided for creating a face sketch avatar. The face sketch avatar may be defined by correlating a sketch of a face to a plurality of facial feature points on an image of the same face. The face sketch avatar may be modified to mimic subsequent images or video image of the face based on the changing location of the facial feature points on the subsequent images and the correlation between the face sketch avatar and the facial feature points. The face sketch avatar may be provided during a communications session so as to provide for video communications.
