The first substance (S1) is mixed with magnetic carrier particles (M), and the carrier particles contained in primary substance flow (P) including the bound first substance, are precipitated and are separated by magnetic forces into residual primary substance flow (R) depleted of first substance and secondary substance flow (S) enriched with first substance. The change of content of first substance in secondary substance flow or in residual primary flow caused by variation of a parameter is determined, and a parameter of separation method is set based on the change of content. The first substance is mixed with magnetic carrier particles, and the carrier particles contained in the primary substance flow including the bound first substance, are precipitated and are separated by magnetic forces into a residual primary substance flow depleted of the first substance and a secondary substance flow enriched with the first substance. By varying a parameter which influences the magnetic forces, in a predetermined manner, during the precipitation, the content of first substance in the secondary substance flow and/or in the residual primary substance flow is influenced by the variation. The change of content of the first substance in the secondary substance flow or in the residual primary flow caused by the variation is determined and, on the basis of the change of the content depending on the predetermined variation, at least one parameter of the separation method is set. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a control and/or regulating device for a device used for separating first substance from a primary substance flow; (2) a separating device for separating first substance from a primary substance flow; (3) a machine-readable program code executed in control and/or regulating device of the separating device; and (4) a storage medium storing program executed in control and/or regulating device of the separating device.
