The invention relates to an energy storage apparatus comprising at least one electrical or electrochemical storage cell (10) for storing electrical energy, wherein the storage cell (10) has at least one electrode arrangement (12) and at least one volume compensation element (15), which can be reversibly compressed and/or decompressed in at least one direction for compensating for a change in volume of the at least one electrode arrangement (12). Provision is made for the volume compensation element (15) to be in the form of a three-dimensional textile (14), more precisely in the form of a textile spacer (42), wherein this textile spacer (42) has a sequence of a plurality of textile layers (44, 46) arranged spaced apart from one another and pile threads (50) aligned transversely to the layers, which pile threads connect these textile layers (44, 46) and keep said textile layers spaced apart from one another by virtue of the compressive rigidity of said pile threads. The invention furthermore relates to a method for volume compensation of at least one volume-changing electrode arrangement (12) of an electrical energy storage apparatus (10).
