The invention is in the field of medical and nutritional diagnostics. It provides means and methods for determining the antioxidant status of a sample. The invention provides a method for obtaining a stable radical ABTS in solid form comprising the steps of dissolving ABTS, converting the dissolved ABTS into radical ABTS with a peroxidase in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, freezing the thus obtained radical ABTS solution and freeze drying the frozen solution to obtain radical ABTS in solid form.
