The present invention provides a method using restriction fragment mass polymorphism (RFMP) to examine for a genetic mutation that causes drug resistance in a patient infected with HIV, wherein the method is sensitive and can accurately as well as readily examine large volumes for a genetic mutation in the total 17 codons located in the reverse transcriptase gene (codons 1 to 335) and in the protease gene (codons 1 to 99) within the HIV pol gene of the subject being examined. According to the present invention, in the event that a double mutation occurs, that is, two nucleotides being changed in a single codon, the exact type of mutation can be examined, and also the occurrence of a genetic mutation causing drug resistance can be effectively determined in a subject who is a patient infected with HIV to whom antiretroviral agent has or has not been administered an. Therefore, the present invention enables appropriate medication treatment and early diagnosis of a mutation causing HIV drug resistance in patients infected with HIV, thereby preventing the risks of missing the treatment period and of disease progression.
