The present invention provides a member for die casting, said member being to be used in contact with a molten metal. The member is provided with: a base metal consisting of a hot-work tool steel; a nitrided layer having a thickness of 200 to 400μm and consisting of two layers, namely, a nitrogen-diffusion layer which is in contact with the base metal and is composed of the base metal and nitrogen diffused therein and the Vickers hardness of which is higher than that of the base metal by 50HV or more, and a nitrogen compound layer which is contact with the nitrogen-diffusion layer and which consists of an iron-containing nitrogen compound and has a thickness of 5 to 40μm; and an oxide layer which is in contact with the nitrogen compound layer and contains an iron-containing oxide and which is to be brought into contact with the molten metal.
