The method involves transmitting data packets in the form of data blocks (22) from one automation device to another automation device over a data communication link. Several data blocks are sequentially transmitted in a communication cycle (24). The portion of duration of the communication cycle is reserved for retransmission. Each communication cycle is divided into time slot (28) for data blocks and reserved time slot (30), so that erroneous data block is transmitted again in the reserved time slot.
