The method involves radiating one or multiple identical high frequency signals in measurement cycle, and providing space between the signals, which is larger than the period of received signals, particularly for the determination of relative velocity of objects. A phase offset of individual transmitted signals or the high-frequency signals used for mixing or low-frequency individual received signals is varied. An independent claim is also included for a radar system for detecting surroundings of a motor vehicle.
