Optical system and test procedure for testing the functionality of an optical system

The testing method involves using a test object (20) that is present in a detection area (12) of the sensor, where the detection area is contained in the monitoring area. The test object is changed during the execution of the testing method with regards to its position in the detection region its orientation and its optical properties. The test object is observed after the change for comparison a previous observation or during the change in by a detection unit, particularly a receiver of the sensor. A test signal is generated when the observed change is not detected in the expected way. An independent claim is included for a sensor unit with a sensor for monitoring a monitoring area.
