PURPOSE: A biosensor for evaluating the presence and toxicity of phenol compounds contained in a lignin hydrolysate is provided to accurately measure the presence and concentration of toxic materials without a pretreatment process.;CONSTITUTION: A gene construct contains inaA promoter(sequence number 3) of an E.coli strain BL21(DE3) and a lux gene which is operately linked to the promoter. The lux gene is lux CDABE. A biosensor for detecting a toxic material contained in a lignin hydrolysate contains the E. coli strain BL21(DE3) which is prepared through transformation by introducing the gene construct. The toxic material is furfural, benzoic acid or a salt thereof, acetic acid or a salt thereof, or phenol compounds.
