PURPOSE: A lithium titanium oxide for an electrode active material is provided to prevent the swelling phenomenon due to precipitates formed on the electrode surface in a high rate charging and/or discharging reaction, thereby being capable of stably maintaining high charging and/or discharging efficiency. CONSTITUTION: A lithium titanium oxide for an electrode active material has a composition ratio of titanium(Ti/Li) of 0.8 or more to lithium on the surface thereof. The lithium titanium oxide has a lithium composition of 20% or less on the surface thereof. A lithium secondary battery comprises the lithium titanium oxide as an electrode active material. The lithium titanium oxide is manufactured by a step of mixing and reacting a lithium compound and a titanium compound; and a step of heat treating the reaction mixture at 700-900 deg.
