PURPOSE: A classification preprocessing in medical ultrasound shear wave imaging is provided to improve ultrasound shear wave imaging by classifying the locations of displacement as fluid, or fluid tissue, solid tissue, or other class. CONSTITUTION: A classification preprocessing in medical ultrasound shear wave imaging comprises: (32)measuring displacement over time at a first location within a patient; (36)determining a signal-to-noise ratio of the displacement over time; (38)determining a maximum of the displacement over time; and (42)classifying, with a processor, the first location as a first one of a plurality types of tissue. The said classifying is a function of the maximum of the displacement over time and the signal-to-noise ratio of the displacement over time.
