PURPOSE: A heat pump system for an electric vehicle and a control method thereof are provided to prevent the loss of heating function due to frost by detecting the frost in advance.;CONSTITUTION: A heat pump system for an electric vehicle comprises a compressor(10), a first heat exchanger(20), a second heat exchanger(30), an expansion valve(40), and a switching valve(50). The compressor compresses and transmits a refrigerant with high temperature and high pressure. The first heat exchanger is installed in the indoor room of the electric vehicle. The first heat exchanger serves as an evaporator in a cooling mode and a condenser in a heating mode. The second heat exchanger is installed in the outside of the electric vehicle. The second heat exchanger serves as a condenser in the cooling mode and an evaporator in the heating mode. The expansion valve is installed in a pipe for connecting the first and second heat exchangers to expand the condensed refrigerant.
