Disclosed is a supported catalyst and a method for selective catalytic conversion of cellulose to sorbitol in the presence of this catalyst. The supported supported catalyst includes a porous carrier including a plurality of pores, an acid functional group and a metal located at at least one of the surface and the pores of the carrier at the same time. In addition, the selective catalytic conversion of the disclosed cellulose to sorbitol includes contacting the cellulose with water in the presence of the supported catalyst to hydrolyze and contacting the hydrolyzed cellulose with hydrogen to obtain sorbitol.
