A discontinuous centrifuge for the solid-liquid separation of a crystal suspension comprises a centrifuge drum (2), the rotational axis (3) of which coincides with the axis of symmetry of the cylindrical wall (7) of the centrifuge drum (2) and is vertically disposed, and into which the crystal suspension can be filled as a filling product (9) in a predetermined quantity, and a continuously measuring distance measuring sensor (15), which is disposed on the inside of the centrifuge drum (2), always outside of the filling product (9), in order to determine a distance (A1 to A4) to the free surface (10 to 13) of the filling product (9) in a measuring surface (17) that is rotationally symmetrical about the rotational axis (3) and substantially perpendicular to the rotational axis, and a controller, which is equipped to establish the quantity of the filling product during the subsequent pouring depending on the distance (A1 to A4).
