A process for making crack-free and dense three-dimensional articles fabricated from a gamma-prime precipitated nickel-based superalloy by selective laser melting (SLM) comprises the following steps: a) providing an SLM device (10) with a SLM control unit (19); b) providing a three-dimensional slice model (SM) of the calculated cross-sectional object which is transferred to and stored in the SLM control unit (19); c) preparing powder of the gamma-prime precipitated nickel-based alloy material needed for the SLM process; d) producing a powder layer (18) having a regular and uniform thickness on a substrate plate (13) of the SLM device (10) or on a previously processed powder layer (14); e) melting the prepared powder layer (18) by scanning a region corresponding to a cross section of the article according to the three-dimensional disk model (SM) stored in the control unit (19) with a focused laser beam (17); f) reducing the substrate plate (13) by one layer thickness; g) repeating steps d) to f) until the last cross-section according to the three-dimensional disk model (SM) is reached; wherein for the melting step e), the laser power, the focal diameter (d) of the focal spot (20) and the scanning speed of the focused laser beam (17) are adjusted so that heat conduction is obtained.
