The converter has active bridges (1,2) which is electrically connected to alternating current (AC)-link. A first active bridge (1) has active semiconductor switches (6,8) for setting first active bridge with different switch configurations, so that different voltages are applied to primary terminals of AC-link. The AC-link comprises transformer (3) with primary terminals connected to primary winding and secondary winding. The AC-link also has inductor connected in series with either of two windings, and a saturation coil (5) connected in a series with either of two windings. An independent claim is included for method for operating electrical converter.
