Certain embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for optimizing a self-organizing WiMAX network (SON) to provide Automatic Neighbor Relationship Functionality (ANR) that provides up-to-date macro information about neighboring base stations and WFAP around the WFAP can be obtained. In one embodiment, a WFAP detects a change in information about neighboring base stations. The WFAP then sends updated information about neighboring base stations to a SON server for validation. Upon receipt of validation from the SON server, the WFAP updates its neighbor relation table with the updated information about neighboring base stations.
