Fermentative production of D-phenylglycine in a recombinant cell comprises: (a) conversion of phenylpyruvate to phenylacetyl-coenzyme-A; (b) conversion of the phenylacetyl-coenzyme-A to benzoylformyl-coenzyme-A; (c) conversion of the benzoylformyl-coenzyme-A to benzoyl formate; and (d) conversion of benzoyl formate to D-phenylglycine. Independent claims are included for: (1) D-phenylglycine prepared by the process; and (2) a recombinant cell that is capable of producing the detectable amount of D-phenylglycine, comprising an enzyme encoded with a gene for catalyzing the step (a), an enzyme encoded with a gene for catalyzing the step (b), an enzyme encoded with a gene for catalyzing the step (c), and an enzyme encoded with a gene for catalyzing the step (d).
