The device has movable, heated welding elements with respective upper and lower welded areas. The separating recesses are formed in the welding areas. The welding recesses are connected to lower welding area to close the sausages (23). The welding elements are arranged, such that the welding areas are opposite to one another and the distance between the separating recess and separating projection is smaller than the distance between welding projection and welding recess. The separating recesses are cooperated with separating projection for separating sausage strand (20). The welding projections are formed on opposing portions of upper welding area corresponding to recess. An independent claim is included for a method for closing and separating sausages from sausage strand.
