The machine tool (10) has a workpiece carrier (16) arranged on a machine base (12). The carriages (28a-28d) are arranged on machine frame (14) to hold the respective tool units with tool supports. Each carriage is displaced in horizontal direction, and each tool unit is displaced in vertical direction relative to respective carriage. A primary drive unit (38) is provided to displace the carriages (28a,28c) in horizontal direction. A secondary drive unit is provided to displace the carriages (28b,28d) in horizontal direction.
