The device has multiple spatially distributed machine units locally controllable by an operator using an operation unit. The operation unit is designed as a mobile apparatus that is carried by the operator. A docking station is arranged in a region of the machine units and provided with a machine-side data communication interface. The communication interface of the docking station is brought in a data transfer connection with a device-side data communication interface of the operation unit in vicinity of a machine unit. The interfaces comprise a radio device for wireless transfer of data. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining the locations of a service person for providing services to a machine equipment.
