The method involves determining a target speed depending on an actual path of a designed gear shift or depending on a target path of the designed gear shift. A level target speed valid for a level is determined depending on the actual path or the target path of the gear shift. A pitch target speed valid for the pitch is determined from the level target speed depending on the driving resistance in the pitch, depending on dynamic behavior of a drive unit (1) and depending on speed transformation of the motor vehicle. The pitch target speed is used as target speed of the gear shift. An independent claim is included for a control device, particularly a gearbox control device, for a motor vehicle.
