The method involves detecting actual temperature of exhaust gas in stop mode of an internal combustion engine. The exhaust gas is undergone to an emergency cooling during lowering of the actual temperature on a critical temperature. The critical temperature is specified on the basis of thermal shock temperature distinctive for the gas sensor. The emergency cooling is carried out by supplying fresh air to the exhaust gas. An air supply unit (18) is activated for the fresh air supply.
